"ODE TO MERRY MAID"

Merry Maids, Molly Maid, Maid Brigade, MaidPro, The Maids International--doing for people what they can't or would rather not do for themselves. Maids (who generally aren't merry) work what's more or less a neighbor's-grasscutting job for grownups: their business depends on your willingness and ability to finance a disinclination to clean (or your regular absence from) your place. Sara Kermanshahi/Natureboy doesn't evoke someone's biting that hand, but she saddens the feeding. "Just wash it all down, you're on your way" is the most despair-inducing "encouragement" you can receive in a job without hope of advancement outside a short and narrow track. Reverbed sing-song guitar and multitracked vocals backgrounded by light synth and glockenspiel pillow a gentle descent of expectations to match reality--"waiting to be a saint/I'm losing the strength it takes, it takes/I'm fooling you all for my own sake"--and a dreamlike circular ode sung as consolation.
