"IF I CAME BACK AS A SONG"

Barnaby Bright sounds like something I've heard before. Something familiar. Like listening to an old Christmas photo, or playing back that time I met my girlfriend at the airport after she was gone for four months. Or maybe it was just Zach Braff's last attempt at a romantic comedy. I mean that as a compliment. This is traveling music of the best kind, and man, do I love traveling. The walk down into the chorus has the ring of George Harrison. The dry acoustic, combined with the candor and care of the vocals hit me like Paul Simon. The electric guitar-as-horn flourish could have been part of 'All You Need Is Love.' There's nostalgia everywhere. They even had me reaching for "The Freewheelin'" to see what the hell track two was. That's right, I don't know the track titles of iconic records because I'm a member of the new music consortia that consumes mp3s, rather than albums (and who can blame me, running a track-a-day site?). But Barnaby Bright's sincerity makes me feel a little guilty for writing these words on my computer rather than in a beat-up moleskin at Mayslacks, the corner pub, and a little uncomfortable for admitting that I haven't listened to a whole Dylan album in a while. Maybe I'll do that later. But first, these wonderful souls let me have a moment to myself and I think that if I came back as a song, I'd hope it was this one.
